Picture/sound interference advice.

For ages I've been getting an intermittent buzzing sound through the TV sound when playing DVDs, which varies according to the brightness of the picture - brighter picture = louder buzz. Its pretty annoying. It isn't the telly, as I recently got another and its the same. I've tried another Scart lead - no change - although they are both cheapies, and jiggling the scart at the DVD socket seems to temporarily improve it a bit.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Could it be my fairly cheap DVD player, or might it be worth trying a "flat" scart lead?

I'd be grateful for any thoughts, so I can have an idea where some money might be best spent.

Re: Picture/sound interference advice.

It's the TV that makes the sound. It can be the DVD player that produces an image the TV can't handle. Easiest test is to ask a friend over with his dvd player and his cable. If the buzzing goes away, it's time to invest in a new DVD player (or a NON crt television).

Re: Picture/sound interference advice.

Thanks folks. Its an LCD TV at the moment. I'll borrow a DVD player and see if it makes a difference. As playing with the connection alters/lessens the effect it still wouln't proove anything 100% - just unplugging and plugging the same one in will often reduce it. But if it goes completely, I suppose that would be proof. If no-one else is getting it with ordinary scarts then they would seem unlikely.

I'd forgotten about those magnets - Thanks DW.

Re: Picture/sound interference advice.

Never heard about that on an LCD

Found this in a related forum:

-------------------------------

This is called video buzz and is caused by a leakage of the video signal into the audio. The vertical synch pulses are very strong and if they get into the audio amplifier they make a real buzzing sound.

Try using another input. If you are using the s-video input, try switching over to the composite or component video inputs and see what happens. It may be better on one of those.

If it remains on all inputs it is probably due to a crosstalk problem developed in associate with the main video processing IC chip. The external components could be the problem as well as one of the power supply ripple reducers that decouple the audio amplifier from the video.

So, you may need an expert tech who can trace the problem down at the circuit level and find the culprit parts.

-----------------------------

So judging by that my money would be the DVD players AV-out (internal short?)

Re: Picture/sound interference advice.

Thanks again for the advice. You were all correct and it was the player, fortunately still under warranty.

Looking at it logically, once the TV was eliminated, the player was the obvious culprit. I'm not sure why I was more inclined towards the leads. It actually ran in my mind that I had had this problem before with another player, but my memory could well be wrong.

I think the problem must have developed gradually, because when I now use the new player the differnce is immediately apparent. I hadn't realised just how bad it had become.

Thanks again guys!
