Installng a new HD

Got my new HD yesterday - now totally confused as to how to install it on the old PC (no HD in at present).

I've set the jumpers right to make it the master but now what?

I've got a copy of XP on CD (non bootable) and having had a play around with the boot up options I'm no further forward and keep getting boot failure like I did when the old HD failed.

I guess I need a boot disk but haven't a clue where to start. BTW this PC is running Vista.

Think I'll be asking IT next week to help me out.

The first thing you need to do is to format your HD and make it bootable. The easiest way to do this is to find a CD image and burn a bootable CD to get you to a DOS prompt. Then you can fire off your XP install and it will take care of it.

I have a bootable CD image - I will upload to my website and post the link. Just burn it in NERO or whatever, pop it in the CD drive and change your BIOS to boot from CD first.

If you're installing XP on it, booting from the XP disc should let you format the drive and install no problem. What kind of booting error are you getting?

Boot failure.

BTW it's not original XP discs - no PC ever comes with original operating software now, so I've got a copy of XP that my work mate copied off works discs.

You've got the boot settings in your BIOS set to CD first, then HD - right?

Re: Installng a new HD

Yup all sorted - it was the boot disk I created wasn't booting. Got one of the IT geeks to create me one.
He even embedded SP2 and all the registration (corporate licence) into it as well. Worked a treat. Just need to get all the security stuff reloaded now and get a router for a wireless home hub of 2 pc's and a laptop.
