Vista - please read!

People running windows vista who have not noticed it updating must do this: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b/934562/en-us
Your pc will say windows is up-to-date but it's not. The main tell tail sign is that windows defender will not update.
windows error code 0x80240029
Thousands of people are having the same problem and think it is a defender based problem, it is not! They are trying to take off defender to eliminate the problem, this won't help! You need to start in safe mode and then type in what the windows site is saying!
lol

Re: Vista - please read!

I've disabled our updates until they release a service pack for it as it kept screwing the machine up.

Re: Vista - please read!

This is not a new issue. It happens to XPs too. On XP you don't need to boot into safemode; Just stop the update service, rename the folder and start the service again. It happens because the datastore gets corrupted and Windows apparently don't know how to deal with that. A dead giveaway is the windowsupdate.log in your system catalogue. If the datastore is corrupt, it shows in that log file (as pointless 0x...... errors)

It is an issue with the "wuauserv"-service. Better known as automatic updates. The datastore is a part of that service. It is included in XP and it is included in Vista. In some aspects, the severity of a broken datastore may be greater than with XP (likely due to new license code), but the problem is not new.

Oh, I see. Windows defender updating did not bother me, it was the fact that all applications stopped updating. This problem only started with vista when I came back from hols and done a restore! My xp works fine! It came to light on the 4th of april while i was away! the first lot of updates worked, but when ultimate tries to update it all stopped working! there were no tell-tail signs! It was the fact that I noticed several things missing that were included with the ultimate vista. If they had not updated before I would be none the wiser. Widows update scanned with vista-which updates not on a webpage but a seperate screen- and then says windows is up-to-date. So it is new to me and everyone else who buys a vista pc.
friar, are you trying to be funny? I was only trying to help!
People running other versions of vista will not be aware of this as the ultimate extras like the dreamscene are not available to them. My thread was for vista users and not xp users! They need to be made aware because the windows update utility says it is uptodate after scanning and the ultimate scanner says the same! Error message when you try to update Windows Defender on a Windows Vista-based computer: "Error found: Code 0x80240029"

Re: Vista - please read!

I had a message last night that AVG had stopped working (I presume it was trying to update) so I ran the update manually which was fine, but the icon that's normally in the task bar (bottom right) disappeared. Werid.

Have to look into this as am also running vista and getting a windows security alerts saying Defender is stopped as is AVG but both when you check the status both say they are running....only started happening yesterday and the normal windows updates that run Thursday morning seemd to go a little screwy...

Which is really interesting as I've disabled all windows updates and I'm getting the same.

I think we are arguing the same fact. The error code is vista specific, but the corruption of the datastore is not. I hope this clarifies it enough so both of us are correct and noone goes away angry ;)

And no, I am not trying to be funny (I wouldn't know how). My point is that if you use automatic updates you are likely not to notice datastore corruption (even on XP), which I believe was your point as well. So the message to the end user would probably be, make sure you check your event logs and possibly the windows update.log (located in your system folder). I am quite sure lots of you had/have this problem on XP, but just never noticed it.
