External Hard Drive USB Question

I just got one of these and want to plug into USB2 can anyone tell me how to spot the difference in a usb1 and usb socket.

There is no difference in the appearance of the sockets, the difference is just the speed of transfer :)

USB2.0 should be backward compatible if you only have USB1.1 but just at the slower rate (USB2.0 is 40x faster :eek:)

With XP - if you plug a USB 2 device into a USB 1 socket, it will come up with a message, saying that the device will run faster if you plug it in a USB2 socket, hence letting you know its a USB 1 socket

if it doesn't take over 3 hours to to transfer a few gig of files then it's usb 2. you'd notice how slow the hdd was if it was running at usb1.1
