Laptop advice please :)
Howdy everyone. I'm looking for a laptop and don't really know where to start as I've never had one before. Due to the impending arrival of another little un in January , the computer room will become the nursery so the desktop is going.
I need it to be a desktop replacement so think I need around a 300gb HD, 15.4" screen, 2-3gb RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, a HDMI out would be nice but not sure what else. I watch movies & TV shows, edit photo's, use Office 2007, surf the net and I don't play pc games.
I was looking at a Samsung R700 (17" screen may be too big) and the Dell M1530 but don't know if I'm going overboard for what I need. Very confused. What laptops do peaople have and could recommend?

I have a Dell 640m core2duo laptop which i use as a desktop and is great, altho not sure if they do this model any more. I have had quite a few various problems with it (think i've just been unlucky) but Dell have been great at sorting them out for me and propmtly too. The last laptop i had was a Dell and that was fab for about 4/5 years when the mouse broke on it but otherwise worked fine.
don't think you'd find a 17" screen too big, but i do fine my Mum's dell laptop a bit weird to use compared to mine as it's widescreen and the keyboard is longer
If you want any more specifics about mine, just let me know :)

Cheers littlesheepy, I did/do think the 17" will be a little big but quite liked the look of it. I'm leaning towards the 15.4" XPS1530, just waiting for Dell Outlet to have a bit of a promotion on this model as it looks like they're discontinuing the xps range in a month or two.
Will have a look at the model you've got if they're still available. What do you mainly use yours for?

Scrap that, mine's a 15.4" and it's perfect lol don't know why i was thinking mine was 17. A 17" is a bit much :) (i feel so dirty saying that lol)
My laptop is mostly used for surfing t'internet, i download *legal* things on it lol i do very basic photo editing etc. watch DVDs/AVI's. Bit's of office work, work timesheets, letters etc. Oh and rip/burn DVDs/CDs.
Love this laptop 'cos it seems to still run at a reasonable speed whilst multitasking. I can be downloading, ripping a dvd, streaming to my ps3 etc. all at the same time whilst still using the internet with a couple of windows open. My last laptop would have burst into flames trying to do that :)

Congrats on your good news Homer. Our first little un was due yesterday but he/she seems quite content where they are at the moment so we are both waiting here patiently to meet them.
Another dell recommendation.
We have a Dell desktop and a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop (15.4" screen) and have never had a days worry with either of them. We use the laptop mainly for surfing but we watch TV/movies on it and d/l onto it with no problems, got it for £389 last September as one pc wasn't enough for us. Think it has only 1gb and it's fine with all of the above so a 2/3gb should be more than enough for what you require.
My mum is looking to swap her desktop for a laptop and I will be getting her one of the new Dell Studio 15 laptops

It sounds like you use your pute for the same stuff as I do. What speed processor does yours have and how much RAM do you have?

and 2038 MB memory
Not sure if that's particularly great or not but as i say, does the job :)

Thanks. I was looking at faster processors but if this one does the job I'll save myself a bit of cash :)

Cheers MG. I think you and littlesheepy have confirmed I'm probably going overboard on the spec for what I need. I'll no doubt still get one that's too good for me (sounds like the wife ) but that's just me.
