Blueray advice needed

I havnt gone Blueray yet but I guess its inevitable.

I hear Blueray plays standard dvds.

I have a zillion standard dvds that I promise to catch up on during my retirement (10 years away).

A million of those zillion are Region 1 dvds.

What will I be playing my R1 dvds on in a few years time?

I suppose my dream answer is for you to tell me multi-region Blueray players do (or will) exist.

Reassuring answers please on a postcard to.......

As far as I am aware, there are no multi-region blu ray players as yet. This applies both to SD DVD's and Blu Ray.

It's got to happen at some point though, surely? Unless there's a really good technical reason. I'm certainly expecting BD players to be able to play multiregion DVDs at some point in the future.

Justwilliam, you'd be better off keeping your current DVD player anyway, unless there's no room for two players under your telly. Maybe grab a nice upscaling player as an investment for the future? Even decent ones are nice and cheap.

I've got a vast collection of DVDs of varying regions myself, but I've also still got all my old chipped or modded players stored up in the attic so I should never be short of something to play them on.

There isn't any technical reason as far as I'm aware. Just an unwillingness by the manufacturers to make them multiregion.

Remember, only a handful of manufacturers are making blu ray players currently. Once the mass-market chinese manufacturers start contributing, I think you'll see multi-region available for DVD. Not sure about blu ray though.
