Digital SLR Cameras

Nice day out at the F1 testing yesterday other than the fact my digital camera has packed up taking photos - virtually a white photo outdoors and although you can see photos taken indoors there are hundreds of lines across a picture. Video remains fine however.

Short of trying to get it repaired at a stupid cost I was looking at a Nikon D40 SLR (cheap(ish) onthe Boots website). Jessops have a decent bundle deal with a zoom lens too. I know it's been superseded by the D40X but that is out of my price range.

Anybody camera afficianado's got any opinions on this camera?

Did you get a DSLR in the end SB? I'm looking at the Nikon D60 or Sony A200.

Nah, went for another Fuji compact as my budget wouldn't stretch to a SLR. Very good it is too. 10mp and 18x zoom. Will do for a couple of years.

Sony's SLR aren't meant to be very good - best sticking to Nikon or Canon.

I ended up buying a Nikon D40 from Amazon for £220 and I'm very happy with the image quality. Just ordered a 70-300 VR zoom lens too so the cost is steadily rising

What zoom factor (e.g. 5x, 10x, 18x) does that lens give you?

I don't think it's easy to compare to a compact, in fact I've no idea where to start.

I've found out - divide the largest number by the smallest - thus yours is roughly 4.3x.

I'm not sure how that relates to your x18 zoom though. Does that make yours 4 times longer range?

No, it doesn't. Using Zoom length as a reference is pretty meaningless to be honest as it is simply the ratio between the two lens sizes. To give you some more useful figures to work with my Panasonic FZ18 has the following specifications (assuming you are shooting at its maximum image size of 8.1 M pixels. As you reduce the image size, you increase the zoom range where it increases to a maximum of 28.7X ):

Optical 18X zoom, f = 4.6mm to 82.8mm
35 mm film camera equivalent: 28mm to 504mm

The size of your imaging sensor/chip also has to be taken into account (though I don't know the calculations for that. Suffice to say, the bigger the chip the better )

The price from Amazon was good.
Just for info. I use Mifsuds. The sell used and new. Currently for £200 you can get a Nikon D50 or D70.
