Converting NTSC to PAL

Does anyone know of a prog that does this? I've checked the net and can't find one. It seems a long and drawn out process if done manually.

TMPGenc will do it during the encode process - but why would you want to? Any conversion will result in the picture "stuttering". You'd be better off leaving it for your TV to deal with, as most TV sets will convert NTSC to PAL on playback.

I've been selling some dvds on Ioffer.com mostly to Americans and some of them asked for an NTSC only disc. I'd have thought from wot I've read on the net that most TVs in the US would be duel NTSC/PAL. I didn't realise a conversion would result in picture stuttering so prob not worth it like u say Wilko.

Ah, ok.

I don't think you can do it without re-encoding the disc. However, you may struggle a bit because NTSC standard is 29.97 frames per second, and PAL is 25 frames per second - therefore the encoding would have to ADD extra frames to make it up to 29.97 fps. Or playback would be slowed to make up the difference. Unless, of course, it is already encoded as FILM format which is 23.97 frames per second.

But anyway, whichever, it still needs to be re-encoded in something like TMPGenc (which is free by the way).

It is an NTSC format which is typically used for movies - i.e. where the primary target is cinemas and not TV.

I am no techy but I did think the free software combo I have would allow you to make 1 legal copy to dvdr for personal use only and select either PAL or NTSC output.

The softwares are DVD Decryter and DVD Shrink. I was told you need a compatable version of each ie not a too old or perhaps even too new version of Dvd Shrink.

I find this a useful pair of tools when I buy Hitchcock dvds only available in France where they insist on French subtitles that cant be removed. I can make a copy and deselect subtitles.

I have watched many PAL/NTSC transfers and vice versa, I never noticed anything bad like stumbling but 'experts' have said the picture quality can lose a little (particularly one way, presumably PAL to NTSC) which I can believe.

I guess it depends on how fussy you are. My ears and eyes are not superhuman so a lot of this 'quality' argument seems to be recognised by techys analysis machines rather than their human receptors. I am not saying I cant tell the difference between good and bad, of course some public domain John Wayne movie from 1931 is fuzzier than the latest Disney 5.1, but my personal opinion based on considerable experience is a lot of these experts are competing with each other to report defects invisible to the average viewers eyes and ears.
