Re: The 'miscellaneous' footy thread

Yes, that is also true.

Much of the problem is caused by the differences in culture. A substantial element of UK youth drink simply to get drunk. This is where the "yob culture" image of the UK comes from, because our football fans will drink extensively before a match and European authorities don't really know how to handle it.

In my experience of Italy, Spain, Belgium, France etc, people enjoy drinking in moderation and don't drink simply to get drunk - and here lies the problem.

So, whilst the police were indeed heavy handed, the Man Utd fans certainly aren't angels. But what is totally unforgiveable were the stories of a ten year old boy (Man Utd fan) being battered by police with a baton, whilst his father was being restrained for trying to protect him. Unbelievable.

Re: The 'miscellaneous' footy thread

Yeah I agree about the drinking culture. Of the places i've visited in europe, somewhere like Helsinki (in summer) is a perfect example of the bar/cafe culture.
Outside drinking at a pace to relax, not get stupidly intoxicated.
It's also quite easy to generalise...there are obviously thousands of travelling fans who go for the trip, the atmosphere, the game etc...
It's one big shame really...

I would mention the lack of crowd trouble at the cricket world cup, but the action so far doesn't merit a comparison (entertainment wise)

Did anyone see Lionel 'Blair' Messi's goal for Barca against Getafe last weekend? It was amazing. Picture quality on the following links isn't great.

Messi Vs Getafe

Messi Vs Maradona

Watched Wolves Vs Brum and how Wolves didn't win this one I'll never know, they even missed an injury time penalty to make it 3-3 Same old story for Wolves as they don't take their chances and continually get punished for it, it's a shame as they play some nice football.

Re: The 'miscellaneous' footy thread

saw that West Ham were fined £5.5 million quid

Lots of cash...it's about time the FA fined figures like this. As when they fine Chelski and the richer clubs its like only £50 grand and the clubs can easily afford it that's why the break the rules and that. Figures in the millions will make them not do it again..
