I’m looking to buy a large box set from the US - the complete Homicide series - which works out at around £100 and I wondered if anyone could recommend which is the best place to order from in terms importing and hopefully not having to pay tax/import duty.

While I’m checking am I right that if I do get hit there is import duty on top of VAT? Can someone clarify how much this would be on £100?

As for import charges I think you get charged VAT on the cost of the item over £18 so look at the price, take £18 off it and then work out the vat. There`s also Royal Mail`s handling charge, I think thats about £4

I ordered all of this series from here quite a few months back. They arrived in a Swiss Post postal sack and there was no customs to pay. I don't know that they do this regularly though.

vat ie customs is worked out:

declared value + handling fee x 17.5% vat

100 + 4 x 1.175 = ~122.20 = 22.20 'Customs charge'

edit - the 4 is assuming royal mail hadling charge - be aware that fedex/dhl etcetc charge more to clear customs

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to check this so thoroughly. I’ve read that Deepdiscount usually have a sale coupon that applies to everything late in November so I’m going to hang on and see if this comes up again before ordering - if not I may try dvdstars.
