I’ve seen a couple of people refer to ‘customs friendly’ retailers and wondered if anyone could recommend any for R1 imports to the UK.

Well in the case of Loaded and MovieTyme, they pre-pay the customs for you - hence a little bit more money! :)

AxelMusic was a smaller store but is now growing, which is noticeable in some more competitive prices, their wonderful "10% back" scheme and lots more special offers than there used to be... Sadly, when it comes to some box sets, Loaded, Axel and even (but not always) MovieTyme are cheaper than PlayUSA - cases in point: The Sopranos, Six Feet Under...
