Heard the Arctic Monkeys album today and was genuinely surprised by how good it was.

After the first single was played to death by Radio 1 (until it really started to do my head in) I wasn't expecting much but it's very good in a kind of slightly funkier modern Jam kind of way.

Best album of 2006 (well so far anyway!)

I also had the pleasure of hearing the Arctic Monkeys new CD for the first time yesterday.

It's everything I expected it to be, after the strong first single in the later half of last year, and the the equally strong 2nd single (when the sun goes down), the rest of the cd definitely lived up to my expectations.

It will be my 2nd Music CD purchase of the year, after just grabbing the new Strokes CD, which I must say after not been that big of a fan of some of their previous stuff, the new album is a winner for me already.

So 2006 has started with a musical bang already. I personally think the Arctic Monkeys will grow into a band as big as Oasis in the UK, watch out for their first CD album been the fastest selling by a debut artist ever!

Another one to keep an eye out for in 2006 is the Long Blondes - no album out yet, but just 3 very ltd single releases, and already been tipped by NME to be the next big thing as well, and guess what? They are also from Sheffield as well - it's all happening in Sheffield at the moment.

Just heard the monkeys cd...very very average

The hype will build them up come the summer festivals...I thought i'd probably get into them...but the album is so repetitive.

The Flaming Lips album will be marvellous I think.

Yeah, the Long Blondes are a great band. i'm considering trying to obtain all their early singles now, before the rush starts. Might save myself a good few quid!

Have to admit they've completely passed me by (my NME reading days are alas behind me). How would you describe their stuff?

They have about 10 members and they create beautiful melodies and eclectic sound.

If you like the band mogwai or arcade fire you can't go too wrong with these guys...

The Panic in the Disco album is also good fun
