I am Legend

Fans of Heston's The Omega Man and Price's The Last Man on Earth may or may not look forward to Will Smith playing the lead role in the latest adaptation of the book by Richard Matheson (which I've not read).

I enjoyed the Omega Man but haven't seen the Vincent Price film, should be good though.

I've seen Omega Man and Last Man on Earth, and have the DVDs too.

I read the source novel (I Am Legend) years before I saw either movie. Still have the paperback in my collection. I can recommend it. Short, too (only 140 pages).

Re: I am Legend

The Omega Man is just about the only film that ever creeped me out. Gave me "end of the world" nightmares for weeks - I was 7 or 8 and I think it was probably more a phase I was going through than anything particular about the actual film.

Yeah, it's weird how certain films at certain times in your life can do that. The Omega Man was creepy but the film that ruined my childhood was Don't Look Know. Loads of my mates have seen it as an adult and it doesn't bother them but it definitely had an effect on me as a child and the film still creeps me out now.

Re: I am Legend

I'm looking forward to this one.

The Omega Man was one I remembered seeing as a nipper, too. I picked it up on disk last year and have to admit it didn't strike me the same way as it did when I was a kid. And yet, I'm still freaked out by 'The Medusa Touch' after a similar number of years.

I was more impressed by 'The Last Man on Earth', which I was chuffed to see included on one of those '20 movies' boxsets I blagged from DeepDiscount a couple of years back in a BOGOF buying frenzy. Not a great print of the film (not even sure if there is a remastered version available?) but very atmospheric and creepy. I've never read the book but I imagine that was a lot closer than Omega Man?

I have the Midnite Movies Double Feature "Panic in Year Zero / The Last Man on Earth", which sports a new anamorphic OAR transfer of "The Last Man on Earth" (good, but not perfect).

Although it's 2 years since I watched the DVD, and many more since I last read the book, I remember thinking at the time that "Last Man" seemed a lot closer to the book than "Omega Man" ( a good thing, IMO).

BTW, I can't think of any films that make me look under the bed, but two TV programmes still have that effect: "Quatermass and the Pit" (the original 1958 serial) and "The Stone Tape" (a 90 minute SF/supernatural drama from 1972). Both written by Nigel Kneale.

Nigel Kneale! A fellow Manxie!

'The Stone Tape' I've heard good things about but never seen. I wasn't aware it had been released on DVD, so that may need a purchase!

Re: I am Legend

The good news about the Stone Tape is that it is indeed available on DVD, the bad news is that only the BBC Store seems to have it still in stock at £19.99 + postage.

For the record, I remember this from its original broadcast and it stayed with me for years. I always remembered the scenes in the room with the staircase, the final scary sequence in the corridor outside and first 'playback' of the 'new recording' at the end. However, it was shown on one of the BBC digital channels last year and I discovered that aside from those still excellent sections the rest of the piece was actually pretty poor so I didn't pick up the DVD copy I'd been promising myself at the time. Jane Asher still looked pretty good throughout though

Re: The Stone Tape

In different circumstances, I might have been satisfied with an off-air digital copy of "The Stone Tape".

However, I bought the DVD back in December 2002 (Play.com, £14.99 )

On the plus side, the DVD does have a few extras: a Kneale/Kim Newman commentary, and pdf copies of the scripts for "The Stone Tape" and "The Road".
