Sweeney Todd - wasnt sure what to expect as I love Jonny Depp, as a whole like musicals and horror films but find Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton a bit hit and miss tbh but I really enjoyed this and thought both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were brilliant, as were Timothy Spall and Alan Rickman as utterly dispicable characters that made my skin creep.
Very dark and brooding atmosphere and beautifully shot, OH complained the songs were a bit samey at the start which i can kind of see but the thing as a whole worked for me
8.5/10

Oldboy - finally! Mainly due to the repeated praise some of you guys have heaped upon it on the site and boy am I glad I did - thankyou! What a fab but sad film, kept us totally gripped. Bugger, yet another one on the to buy list then......

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ***** / ******

If I see a better film in 2008 (and it's not 'There Will be Blood') I will eat my hat.
Brad Pitt is amazing (no oscar nom? wtf) and once Again, the legend Roger Deakins' photography is breathtaking.

Sweeney Todd *** / *****

Really great for the most part. The sets, costumes, design etc are simply superb.
I think it would have at least another star if the songs were changed to dialogue.
Amateur singers, singing unremerable songs for 99% of the film lessened my enjoyment tbh.

Simpsons Movie ** / *****

Nothing like a movie in there - just a chance to play segment after segment.
The devils curly hair rofled me.

Juno *** / *****

Bit disappointing really. Ellen Page was simply amazing though - AD's Bateman and Cera were great value too but the whole film didn't gel as a whole.

In the Hands of the Gods **** / *****

Engaging doco about 5 tricky soccer players who basically busk through north, central and south america to meet their hero, the legend, Maradona.

Sicko *** / *****

I definitely don't agree with Michael Moore's views and how he perverts the truth constanty - but damn he makes entertaining films.

The Sweeney Todd film is based on the stage version, which is a musical so no surprise to me it's full of singing.

Elizabeth the Golden Age

Decentish sequel to the first film. Beautifully shot and some of the costumes, especially those of the queen are quite spectacular. Cate Blanchett was superb as Elizabeth and Clive Owen was ok as Raleigh. Ultimately it is full of major historical inaccucaries which ruined my enjoyment somewhat. So if you watch it, just watch it and don't question what's in fornt of you and it will be more enjoyable.

7/10

Would I buy it or rent it?
Rent

Don't get me wrong, I knew it was a musical before I watched it.
I just know the film would be a lot better with dialogue instead of amateur singing.

I also watched Sweeney Todd last night.

I thought the amateur singing was actually OK, they did a really good job of it. However, I just thought the source material was very weak - the songs were very poor on the whole, with only a few stand-out ones.

All in all, not my type of movie, but very well done apart from the quality of the songs.

28 Weeks Later

Passable follow up. Interesting to see Rose Bryne in it before she was the lead in Damages.

Already bought it but I'd say rent it unless you are a completist.

Heat

Always said no to this when the hubbie suggested it, dunno why though I love Al Pacino. Finally got round to watching this last night and it was just fantastic. Carlitos way is my favourite Pacino role but this comes a close second.

9/10

Probably the last person on the planet to see this.

I haven't seen it MG.

Sweeney Todd - watched this last night too. Have to agree about the songs, very samey in parts, and not as good as the stuff you get from Danny Elfman. Generally very enjoyable, although a little disappointed with some aspects of the film, but I think I probably hyped it up too much. Thought the acting was great though, Depp was brilliant as always, especially in that little dreamy scene.

Heat was the reason I had to get a surround sound system thanks to the gun-fight I was blown away by at the cinema. It was consequently the first film I watched when I got my surround sound and cranked it up to relive that moment. Stunning in everyway.

Hmmm wonder if there is a DTS version about or if it will get the HD treatment?

Shoot 'em Up! Does what it says on the tin, unbelievable, unconvincing and unnecessary, but still, it was bloody fantastic!
