The Squid and the Whale – I’m really not sure what to make of this film, made me laugh though and his wife was a bit of a s*ag.

Three - actually miles better than what I thought it would be like. Plus Kelly Brook is literally semi-naked all the way throughout the film and you get to see a full frontal nudity of her at least twice. Story made me laugh and the ending wasn't too bad either. Couldn't quite figure out if Kelly was meant to have an American or British accent during this film though. :?

Man Bites Dog

Excellent black comedy...heard about it for a few years but finally got to watch it...
I've got the australian film 'the magician' on pre-order. It sounds exactly like MBD.

EDIT:

How freaky is this???

The director just died

story

I didnt know Spielberg was involved with it, didnt notice his name in the credits

He was originally gonna direct it I think, but ended up producing it.

Just watched;

8 1/2

Technically superb film but I wasn't blown away by it like I thought I was.

I think the opening to 8 1/2 is possibly one of the greatest sequences ever shot. The car filling up with an unkown gas, the absolute terror and claustophobia and then just to float off, find himself tethered to a baloon and then...Mastrioanni wakes up reaching out. Superb.

I agree the film is a bit whimsical and probably not the Fellini film that I would watch most often (that honour would go to La Strada Or I Vitelloni) but just for the sheer imaginative process and the weird world it creates, I thik it remains his best work.

Sorry to go on a bit... I love Fellini (as you can probably tell) and rank him along with Bergman and Bresson as one of the top auteur directors ever.

Just watched:

Divorce Italian Style & Seduce & Abandoned.

Both get ****/*****

To think I wasn't gonna bother buying these criterions as I wasn't sure I would enjoy "Italian Comedy" much. However, these are 2 really adorable films...they are comedic but also have a very ascerbic edge to them, they condemn the Sicilian way of life quite radically and from what I can gather from the documentary I watched and the liner notes, they were very controversial on release and I can totally understand why. Well worth a watch in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong...it has moments of sheer genius.
The opening as you described so well especially.
The one shot of him falling from the sky is just stunning.

Out of all of the criterion films that i've seen (without ever hearing of 5 years ago), The Wages of Fear is the one that blew me away.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Hard to find movie set in the 1930's with an adventurist archaeologist who tries to find the fabled lost ark of the covenant.
Well worth a look...
