At the cinema - Stay Alive. A teen video game themed horror-lite.
I'm not a horror fan - frankly tired of the number of them in the last year or two. But this wasn't too bad. Not great by any means but a watchable, and short, evenings worth maybe especially for gamers (not that its realistic, but there are lots of references). Apparently this was made as an R certificate in the US but was heavily cut to get a PG-13, but gore has become really tiresom to me and I thought its abscence probably actually helped. Had it actually been filmed with that intent, it might have been able to rack up the creep factor, which is what horror needs more of, for me, rather than gore.
The odd thing is, despite this oppening to poor reviews, and poor business, in the States, my local has been sold out for every single evening show since Friday - even the usually quiet Monday. I can only think that, with the blockbusters taking up so many screens, audiences are starved for new releases and find Angel-a and Renaisance (both much better) too left field.
The Break-up has also been consistantly sold out, and is stupidly getting a single evning showing at 8pm, instead of a 7.00 and a 9.30. The managers say the studios prefer their films to start at 8 - "the most poular time" - but if its always sold out, I can't see how two evening showings wouldn't sell more tickets. And, anecdotally, I think a lot of people also like slightly later showings, but they are all for older film (which many will have seen). The last showing of many of the films are coming out when its still light, but they are showing to empty halls at 11am. When I asked about this I was told that its "because the French like to go to the cinema in the morning, and we want to encourage that here"!!!

(end of OT rant)
