I was wondering if there were any issues with playing U.S HD-DVD's on UK players? Does a HD-DVD player purchased in the UK have the ability to play both PAL & NTSC and are they multi-region??

In HD world there is no PAL/NTSC issue, and as HD DVD has decided against region coding (for now at least) you can happily buy US disc and play on a UK machine. Blu-ray does have region coding, not always enforced so if you decide to go Blu aswell bear that in mind.

I have a UK Tosh HD DVD player and all but 10 of my discs habe been US

However the PAL/NTSC issue remains for playing Standard Def discs on UK HD player (if you wish to use it to upscale). A UK player will only play R2 PAL disc from your existing DVD colection. :wink:

So a HD-DVD player will play both NTSC & PAL? I have a HD-DVD from the US which says it is NTSC, but another HD-DVD from here that doesn't seem to mention the format?? And is it possible to get these players chipped yet to play all regions/formats of standard DVDs ?

From what I have read, there have been some instances of UK HD players struggling with certain films or batches of USA HD films. I have no idea why this is happening though.
I don’t know of any HD players that are not region locked for standard DVDs.
That is what puts me off buying 1.

Sometimes the packaging says NTSC for a couple of reasons, it may be a Combo disc with the Standard Def version on the other side (which is NTSC) or the marketing/design people just take the info from the cover of the old DVD and pay no attention to the small detail Bit there is no NTSC/PAL for Hi_Def :wink:

As for gettings players chipped, its difficult at the mo as the players rely on Firmware updates downloaded from t'internet. I am sure some sort of Hack/Chip will eventually arrive but may be a while

Not heard that myself, there have been a few problematic discs from the US, mainly Combos (HD one side-SD other side) and Weinstein discs but these have the same problems on US machines as UK ones and have pretty much been sorted by Firmware update. Some French Studio Canal discs also had problems on UK/US machines but again Firmware sorted it. Perils of a new tech I guess

Cheers for clearing up the NTSC/PAL query for me! I guess I'll wait a while longer to get a player, if they aren't multiregion - dvd wise.
