Hi there,

Currently there are no multi-region Blu Ray players. In fact I am not sure if there are any Blu Ray Players that even have multi region SD DVD capabilities. I could be wrong on the latter though.

This is not the be all end all though that it may seem. It is up to the studios whether or not they place a specific region on a disc and at the mo, it only really seems to be FOX and New Line that are doing that.

Therefore there are an awful lot of imports that you can buy that are region free.

If however you wish to buy solely US titles and are therefore wary of some titles being region locked, I would recommend that you buy a US player.

I have no idea if Blu Ray region coding will ever be hacked like it was with DVD. Am sure that eventually some guy will do such but for now I guess, one has to assume that it won't happen.

There are a great many sites telling you which titles are region free etc. One really good one, which also sells US players, is Movietyme. They actually test the discs to check them as opposed to sourcing info from other sites.

Thanks for the info,

took the plunge with the new Panasonic DMP BD30, which is the first Profile 1.1 player in Uk and the website advertises it as multi region for standard dvd, so alls well.

and will take into consideration region free software.

Another dum question.

Are blu-ray discs backwards compatable with dvd players?

Generally im the port of call for any new dvds within the family if I now start collecting blu-ray discs do they include the SD as well?

No.

Some HD-DVD discs had standard DVD on the flip side. But as far as I am aware, there are no Blu ray discs that include standard DVD content.
