HD-DVD may well be dead but in some ways the war still isn't over. I came across this article thanks to a mailing list I'm on. It makes very interesting reading, especially with regard to the HD format sales (HD-DVD and Blu-ray combined) compared to good old-fashioned SD DVDs

Enjoy:

Contrary to what Americans ALWAYS want to believe, I think the format war was won a little further East of Wal-Mart.

There is no format war between SD and BD - why should there be? Investors in HD media know they're a miniscule minority who want that extra qualty. The companies peddling the media aren't stupid, they know it too.

Now that this 'war' is out of the way, a lot of people who were waiting to invest in the winning product will now do so. These aren't rabid fanboys or tech-obsessed nerds slavering over their favoured format (and spitting the dummy when it loses), just ordinary people with disposable income, wanting to get home at night, put their feet up and watch a movie in the best available format. I'm one of them, and now I'm buying BD. And, of course, I'm still buying DVDs too, cos they're not going anywhere.

We don't need a smug yank to tell us that!
