Game over for HD-DVD

Toshiba have announced that they are abandoning HD-DVD:

So Blu-ray is officially the winner. Watch out for lots of bargain buy HD-DVD players and disks over the next few months

Wilko mentions it here:

Walmart drop HD-DVD - Toshiba also to drop the format?

Fair enough, I was just trying to keep the conversation on one thread so it's easier to discuss

Bad news all round.

I have both blu-ray and HD-DVD, but I would much rather HD-DVD had won the war, as it is a much more "mature" technology.

I have been watching things develop over on DVDForums, and I can't believe the ridiculous fan-boy insults that are flying around over there. It truly is one of the most pathetic spectacles I have ever witnessed.

So if anyone from DVDF would like to come on and defend the ridiculous behaviour, be my guest.

I was mostly following the 'format war' palarva on Amazon US's message boards, but things were no more civilised there.

It's funny how people become so protective over their purchases whether it be BluRay v HD-DVD or 360 v PS3, I'll never understand it myself. Maybe people need to convince themselves they've made the right choice.

From a bargain point of view a HD-DVD player seems like a good choice now. The players will continue to drop and so will the discs, of which there's more than enough around to keep you happy. And it will also double up as an upscaling dvd player ...you can't go wrong
