Yeah you are correct, there are 2 options on the customs slip to tick, either merchandise or gift. Not too sure of the gift limit though. :?

customs charge
Sorry to bump this thread and bring this topic up yet again, but I have seen statements in three different places in the last week or so, clearly stating that post IS included in the £18 limit. I know this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any possible changes, or a definitive source of info, or has had recent experience?
Zoot mentioned on a bargain thread that, I think, his brother was told clearly by customs that the goods plus the postage had to be under £18. There was a response that they (customs) were wrong, but is there any chance at all that we are?
I want to order 5 Seasons of a TV series - they are under £18 per item, but VERY close or over it including post. Its a major purchase for me and I would be in deep trouble if they all got stung for customs, so i wondered if anyone has recent experience or definitive current knowledge. The link to the Customs page mentions a VALUE of £18, which I would certainly take to mean post wasn't included in the calculation, but thats an inference rather than explicit. There was also a link here somewhere to DVD Forums, I think, where the £18 before postage limit was given, but, again, if other people are reporting differently.... Is it possible that the rules are now being interpreted differently?
I know PlayUSA keep quite a lot of sets priced at £17.99; I assume thats to miss customs, and they are to be applauded for that, but, again, thats my inference, rather than a fact.
Most of you must be sick heareing of this subject, but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in not being 100% clear about it (although I thought I was until a week or so ago). With the cost of many US sets hovering around £16 - £18 it is a common issue, so I hope you don't mind this being brought up again.

Hadn't realised it was so late, so I phoned Customs and they certainly confirmed that it is the price without postage that counts, so that would certainly seem conclusive.
If anyone has any recent experience either way though, I for one wouldn't mind hearing it. (I'm affraid my obsessive personality is showing here (if it wasn't clear already))

Well from what your saying - if they say its the cost minus postage - if they charge you, you can claim it back?

Yep, that would seem to be the case, but it would be nice to see it made absolutely explicit, in writing somewhere, to prove it. If what they tell me is true, and virtually everything points to it being so, then they do get it wrong and are difficult to convince, as Zoot's relative found out.
If you read this Zoot, did you brother(?) ever chase this up?
