This is still one of my favourite films but I keep hearing that Media Blasters are going to release the 'Ultimate' version which is 10 mins longer than the directors cut and has DTS ES 6.1.

I know the Japanese version has been out for a while but has no english subtitles (not that there's much talking) and there's loads of bootlegs on eBay but I'm holding out for an official release with English subtitles and (hopefuly) the DTS ES soundtrack.

Anyone got any info?

As you said, the Japanese version has been out for ages but I've heard nothing of it being released over here which may be as the extended version has been fairly widely slated for being far too long and dull. Many of Ryuhei Kitamura's films haven't seen the light of day over here so I wouldn't hold out for a R2 release of UV. If you just want to see the extra footage then I'd say pick up a bootleg from Ebay (they tend to be fairly decent if you use a reputable seller). I recommend markymarkgv as I've used him before, although his UV isn't the cheapest out there....:

Cheers Morg. I wasn't expecting a R2 release but there was talk of an R1 one, but I've not heard anything for a while.

Media Blasters announced that they had the US rights to Ultimate Versus, Arigami and Alive back at the beginning of April 2004 but they still haven't released UV, so maybe they decided it wasn't worth releasing if the sales figures weren't what they expected on the other two titles.

I thought that maybe Tartan would have picked it up for R2 sooner as they have re-released some titles that have sold well (The Eye and Audition for example). Perhaps it may be worth your while emailing them to ask if they have any plans to pick up the UK rights for it?

I've never been happy with the quality of bootlegs so I think I'll wait in hope of an official release.

At last, the wait is finally over! Media Blasters are finally going to release a 3-disc ultimate edition of this wonderful flick in March this year and I've pre- it. So I'm a very happy man  :grin:
