My LCD is a couple of years old, and it's digital input is via DVI rather than HDMI. I picked up an HDMI to DVI lead for my DVD player thinking I'd be able to use phono leads for the sound (like with component) but it turns out the HDMI audio options are limited to either HDMI or optical. Alas I don't have an amp separte from the TV which I guess would be the obvious thing to do
Not the end of the world as component is fine, just a bit annoying...

DVI doesn't carry sound at all. Sorry if you knew it already.
So yes, your receiver (amp) would be the obvious choice for sound.
