Pandora is a unique world of fascinating creatures and home to a race of huge blue-skinned beings known as the Na’vi. It also has naturally occurring “Unobtainium”, a mineral worth millions to the people of Earth. Jake Sully is a paraplegic marine, sent to Pandora to operate a genetically bred human-navi hybrid “body” known as an Avatar. But Jake falls in love with the Na’vi people and the world of Pandora – so when it becomes clear that the humans are to unleash their miltary arsenal on the Na’vi, he risks everything to save them from their fate.

Avatar is a stunning movie in every respect. The cast is intelligently assembled, and acting is first rate. Special effects are probably the best in any movie – ever. As you would expect from the most expensive movie ever made! The story is superbly written, with very few plot holes.

If I have any criticism, it would be the similarities with the movie Independence Day. You have the Alien attack (in this case the Humans being the aliens), the rousing speech by the leader of the underdogs (in this case, the Na’vi are the underdogs, and Jake is the speaker), the massive dog fight……there are many more similarities. Also, it is a very long movie – at 2 and a half hours, 20 minutes or more could probably have been shaved off without any adverse impact on the movie.

But these criticisms are minor, and with a movie of this quality, you quickly run out of superlatives to describe it.
